Tell us about your campaign.
In District 21, 20% of our neighbors live in poverty while corporate developers get a pass to pave over our heritage. My campaign is about the 3 A's: Accountability of our government, Accessibility for Rutherford Countians, and Affordability for our homes and food. As a proud parent of a child at Siegel High School, union member, community organizer and Murfreesboro native, I believe it's time we had a fighter on the Commission who knows that our labor — and our land—belongs to the people, not the highest bidder. We need bold solutions to the problems unfettered growth has caused. That's why I will advocate for answers that put people before profit and give the working class a seat at the table where decisions are made. I'll do this by supporting community-driven initiatives like public transit, Community Land Trusts and Community Farm Trusts, expanding rural healthcare services, and making all public meeting agendas and recordings at the county level available in a timely, digital-first format that is available in various languages.
In your own words, describe the responsibilities of the office you are seeking.
To ensure that the quality of life for ALL Rutherford Countians comes before corporate interests, first and foremost. County Commissioners can and should make budget decisions that work for our families and promote smart, sustainable growth. County Commissioners should also hold accountable any and all elected or appointed persons who violate the ethics of their positions – no exceptions. Additionally, it is the responsibility of the County Commission to ensure that all minutes and agendas of meetings are readily available and accessible for residents who are unable to attend due to work, childcare, or classes.
What are your priorities for this office?
I believe that leadership works best when the community is fully represented. To do that, I want to prioritize the flow of communication from District 21 residents to the County Commission, and vice versa, by encouraging public comment and holding community input events. As Rutherford County grows, I want to make sure the focus is on good jobs, public transit and affordable homes; we can't afford to keep losing our neighbors because rent is too expensive or because they can't find a good-paying job with benefits in the County. I also want to make sure decisions are made with transparency and will do my part to make sure those who hold power are held accountable to the public they serve.
Describe your qualifications for this office.
I was born in Murfreesboro, and have been living here since 2006. I had my child here, and I graduated from MTSU. For 12 years I worked as a delivery driver and shift manager, making just enough to pay the bills. And while my cost of living increased, my wages stayed the same. And I know that's the reality for many of our friends and neighbors. As a former journalist working to amplify the issues affecting our communities, I've seen the damage corruption and negligence from those in power can do. And as a community organizer and union member, I know that material changes in the lives of our people come when we work together toward our shared interests — good schools, good jobs, safe communities and homes we can afford.
