Tell us about your campaign.
I'm running for Murfreesboro City Council because I love this city and believe our best days are still ahead of us. Murfreesboro has become one of Tennessee's most desirable places to live because of the people who call it home, the opportunities available here, and the strong sense of community that continues to define us. My campaign is about protecting those strengths while preparing responsibly for the future. As our city continues to grow, we have an opportunity to be intentional about the decisions we make. Growth should never come at the expense of our quality of life. Instead, it should be supported by thoughtful planning, strong infrastructure, responsible budgeting, and a commitment to preserving the character that makes Murfreesboro unique. I believe growth should serve our community - not the other way around. Throughout my career in nonprofit leadership, healthcare operations, and community service, I have worked to solve problems, build consensus, and steward resources responsibly. Those experiences have reinforced my belief that leadership is about listening first, making informed decisions, and always keeping the long-term interests of the community at the center of every discussion. My priorities include improving transportation and infrastructure planning, ensuring development is supported by adequate roads and utilities, supporting public safety, maintaining fiscal responsibility, and strengthening communication between City Hall and residents. I believe the best decisions are made when citizens feel informed, respected, and genuinely included in the process. Above all, I view this position as one of servant leadership. City Council is not about politics, it's about people. It is about neighbors working together to build a community where families can thrive, businesses can succeed, and future generations will be proud to call Murfreesboro home.
In your own words, describe the responsibilities of the office you are seeking.
The primary responsibility of a City Council member is to serve as a steward of the community. The Council establishes policy, adopts ordinances, approves the City's budget, makes land-use and zoning decisions, and sets the long-term priorities that guide Murfreesboro's future. These responsibilities are not to be carried out robotically but with passion, consideration, and conviction for the people it will impact not just today but for years to come. Every vote has lasting consequences. Whether considering infrastructure investments, development proposals, public safety, or taxpayer dollars, a council member must carefully balance today's needs with tomorrow's opportunities. The responsibility is not simply to react to issues as they arise, but to think strategically and make decisions that strengthen the community. Dictating to the future proactively, not REactively operating at the mercy of the future. Just as importantly, a City Council member should listen. Residents deserve leaders who are accessible, transparent, and committed to understanding the concerns and ideas of the people they represent. Good government begins with trust, thoughtful planning, and responsible leadership.
What are your priorities for this office?
My priorities begin with ensuring Murfreesboro remains a city where families, businesses, and future generations can thrive. First, I want to help keep infrastructure ahead of growth by supporting long-term planning for transportation, utilities, public safety, and other essential services. As Murfreesboro continues to grow, we must make decisions that prepare our community for the future rather than constantly reacting to it. Second, I believe in responsible fiscal stewardship. Every expenditure should address a genuine need, produce measurable value for residents, and reflect the priorities of our community. Taxpayer dollars should be invested thoughtfully and transparently. Third, I want to strengthen communication between City Hall and residents. People should understand what decisions are being considered, why they matter, and how they can meaningfully participate in the process. Strong communities are built when government listens well and earns the public's trust. Finally, I will support policies that preserve Murfreesboro's character while encouraging responsible economic development that creates lasting opportunities and improves quality of life for everyone who calls our city home.
Describe your qualifications for this office.
I was born and raised in Middle Tennessee. I have lived in Rutherford County for 27 years and have proudly called Murfreesboro home for the past 8 years. I graduated from MTSU with bachelor's degrees in 2012 and 2013. I am blessed to be a Christ follower and attend the Experience Community Church. I have business operations and real estate experience, including a few years after college having had success managing a small business. Since, my career has primarily been in the nonprofit sector, with multi-million-dollar agencies, where responsible resource stewardship is paramount, and results for stakeholders are crucial. Servant leadership that translates specifically to competent, local public service. I currently serve in leadership roles with several organizations and work in the counter-human trafficking space with an agency serving victims of trafficking and educating the community on exploitation prevention and safety of children. I bring a unique and necessary perspective to the table. I am not partisan - I am a servant leader. My ambition in this role is not political or entrepreneurial - it is that I am a passionate resident who loves our great city and am looking to serve the community I love. I plan to raise a family here and strive to ensure Murfreesboro will always be the envy of our state. I humbly ask for your vote. God Bless and I look forward to connecting with you in the community. Sincerely, Jacob Morphis
